Today I am delighted to publish a new guest post by Alan Lucas titled 7 Blogging Mistakes that will definitely cripple your blog. I hope you all enjoy it.
Understanding what can go wrong with your blog is the first step to ensuring that you don’t make those mistakes. If you already have a blog but can’t seem to hold any steady traffic, then there is probably a reason behind it. We are going to be covering 7 Blogging mistakes that will cripple your blog and reduce the chances of its success.
Being Too Complex
People don’t want to have to think really hard about the content they are reading. A lot of bloggers think by using advanced words and making their writing sound extremely detailed that it will help to prove to people that they know what they are talking about. This is completely untrue. Everyone comprehends things on different levels, so making something more confusing is just going to be pushing a chunk of your readers away.
You should be trying to make the post as simple as possible while still being able to get your message across. It is understandable that some topics are harder to understand than others, but you should still do everything in your power to make it a simple as it can be.
Posting Too Much or Too Little
If you decide you don’t want to post a lot on your blog, then you can expect not to see much traffic on your blog. It makes sense, no content for people to look at means no reason for them to come. On the flip side though, if you post too much, you could easily burn people out or get them bored with your niche. The key is to balance this issue out. Some up with a regular schedule that allows you to post on a consistent basis without burning your audience out but at the same time keeping them coming back. Usually posting 2 or 3 times a week will accomplish this.
Writing For Multiple Audiences
A major mistake that newer bloggers might make is to try and attract everyone in the world. They don’t have any specific demographic or audience they are targeting, they just want people to like their content. This will make your blog extremely generic and won’t keep a certain audience coming back. If you have a target demographic, you can focus on creating content directly for them and have a better chance at them staying engaged with it. You will also be writing about the same niche, so that specific audience will continue to come back for more interesting content.
Writing About a Niche You Don’t Care For
I’m sure you have heard that doing something you are passionate about will always generate better results than trying to accomplish something you hate. Well, this rule easily fits into blogging. If you are just blogging to get better traffic or just because you don’t know what else to write about, then you can’t expect your blog to get very popular. In every niche there are people who are truly passionate about it and are creating posts that can attract and hold other people that are interested.
If you are just writing about that niche but don’t really care for it, then you are going to be creating mediocre content and you won’t be consistent with your blogging duties. No one is forcing you to write about topics you are not interested in, so try to find a niche that you will truly enjoy, then write about that.
No SEO or Marketing Strategies
Getting your blog out there and seen is what it requires to become successful. People are not going to just stumble across your site without some work. Prior to your blog going live, you should have some type of strategy to get it popular and looked at. There are many different ways to promote your blog such as, social media campaigns, guest posting, paid advertising, and much more. Come up with a reasonable strategy so that you can get as much traffic as possible.
You should also be working on search engine optimization. Search engine optimization is what determines how high you are ranked on search results. If you can get a high ranking, then you will start to see incredible amounts of traffic start to flow through your blog. Unfortunately, SEO isn’t something that happens fast. It requires a lot of time and effort before you will reap the rewards, so you will need to start as soon as possible.
Trying to Be Similar to Your Successful Competition
Looking at your competition and seeing what they are doing right to be successful can do wonders for your blog. You will get plenty of new ideas, strategies, and information, but you have to make sure never to duplicate what they are doing. Your site should never be posting the exact same content or even similar content because if people start to notice that you are just copying another site, you will lose any type of credibility you might have had. Researching them is a fantastic idea that will provide you with plenty of benefits, just don’t overdo it.
Blogs can bring you a great and fulfilling experience that can eventually lead you to making some extra money. Hundreds of them are being created every day, but only a few will survive and become successful, so it is important that we do everything we can to make sure our blogs survive and become successful.

Hi Amanda,
These are such important points for all bloggers, not just new folks. I can speak to the publishing too much tip. Early on I decided I would publish an article every day. At that time I was checking my Google Analytics often and I found that after about two weeks my numbers dropped and the comments dropped as well. It was just too much. I also burned myself out a bit.
Great article.
George
George, you are so right, I am probably the opposite, I don’t post enough. I had great intentions and do great initially but after a while I tend to loose motivation. I think balance is what is needed and am trying to post even once a week to see how things go. Thanks for the comment.
Amanda
These are such great tips. I went through a phase of really not enjoying blogging but I’ve found that having a routine and knowing what I want to focus on in advance has really helped me. I recently set myself a new challenge to create a new YouTube video every Monday, so I’m tying this in with a weekly blog post and newsletter.
Thanks Wendy,
Blogging can be a struggle and quite often it is hard to motivate yourself. I agree with having focus in advance as this will always help and best of luck with your YouTube video challenge.
